about

This track marks a shift (*ahem*) for Michael McClure. Having created a full album—and then some—of hard rocking, guitar-based instrumental tracks, on Shifting Sands, Michael curves into a more chill and groove-oriented vein. A fan of garden path rhythms, Michael experimented with the placement of the main rhythmic pattern here (played on vibrato-borne baritone guitar, and mimicked on plinky clavinet) such that it constantly shifts back and forth, keeping you on your toes in a subtle, repetitive, subtle, repetitive way: Where's the confounded ONE?! There was no set title for this song for a long time as Michael was writing its parts, and that made it difficult to really bring clarity to it. Without a good title, there was no central theme to tie the music together. But once Michael selected the title, the song glued together quickly; it now had a story to tell. And the music does exactly that.
